It Takes Money to Grow Money
If you’re like me, you might have grown up hearing that you need money to make money. I think that it’s deeply ingrained in us that we cannot achieve anything unless we have money as an investment. Grant, however, has a different approach to this scenario.
“When we’re given 100 bucks, what do we usually do? We go out and get a job. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but I believe that we have different strategies for earning money. In my case, I don’t go the usual path of getting a job from my $100. I’m always out there looking for one thing โ opportunity.” – Grant Cardone
How many of us are guilty of having trodden this similar path? Some of us might have responsibilities and commitments that cause us to go with a decision that offers us security. That’s understandable, but while trying to take the safer path, we miss opportunities.
“You don’t need money. It would be best if you had contacts. You need people, and you need to relate to them well. You need the right people though โ right people that are already in play.” – Grant Cardone
Grant believes that more than the money itself, learning how to grow it is more important. That’s why he’s a big believer in being on-guard and making opportunities with the right people. Grant illustrates how he could do this by recalling an episode in his reality show, Undercover Billionaire.
“There’s this businessman who owned a mattress store. He wants traffic in his company. I said, โLook, I’m going to drive traffic to your store. I’m going to make sure you have the biggest weekend that you’ve ever been here. I’m going to run a promotion for you such as banners, logos, stand out in the street, you name it.โ He asked me what I wanted, and I said, โI don’t want your money. I want the opportunity.โ” – Grant Cardone
To make the story short, Grant made it one of the highest-earning weekends they’ve ever had, which leads us to another essential point โ equity.
” When he asked me what I wanted, I told him, โI don’t want anything except to be your partner. I want equity.โ He offered me 15% of everything above what he’s doing now. I gladly accepted the offer and asked for a ten grand advance for the 15% he just offered. I got 10,000 and a partnership, which is even better.” – Grant Cardone
Grant is a huge person in the business world, and what he’s teaching is the most significant lesson heโs learned over the years. I 100% agree that it’s high time to break the “It Takes Money to Grow Money” belief and focus on finding opportunities where you can add value. Not only is it the smarter move to make, but it is also a surefire way to help you achieve that mindset of wealth and abundance.
Every Whale Was Once A Minnow
By getting rid of our limiting beliefs about making money, we open ourselves to more opportunities. The question remains, though, what exactly do we need to maximize these opportunities? Grant believes that the answer lies in learning how to negotiate. He looks at his personal experience as a salesman to give us this simple but powerful lesson to succeed.
“I’ve been a sales guy for a long time. When I finally realized that sales were the only thing I could get at 25 years old, I felt like I got to tell people the truth. I can’t do all these tricks โ [Neuro-Linguistic Programming], the look, the mirroring, the matching, the hot potato โ I’ve heard all these strategies. I can’t do it. I’m just going to be me.” – Grant Cardone
And that’s true. How many times have we heard how โbeing realโ can lead us to success? By being real, we learn to be completely honest with ourselves, our values, and our desires. There is absolutely no way to feel proud of what we achieved if we know that we aren’t being true to ourselves.
“So, how you enroll people to your vision is like, you got to get enrolled. โฆ I believe in my product, I believe in my investment vehicle, I believe in my company, I don’t trick people.” – Grant Cardone
I agree on the importance of having integrity when working with other people. It could be challenging to sell your ideas to someone if you cannot stand by what you’re saying. By delivering on your promises, you will surely win people’s trust, build relationships, and from there, imagine the opportunities that will be coming.
And don’t forget to combine this with excellent communication and your selling style. Grant says that soon, you’ll be unstoppable!
“… I started learning from the experts. It was only about duplicating and emulating. Then at some point, you cross over, and you become the master. You think, “I’m going to make that work. That’s going to be my stable datum.” Once I could trust that, then I could build on top of it. If I got consistent results, then I started. Then I started teaching it to other people and learning angles until I created my style and my own.” Grant Cardone
Grant’s effort enabled him to build the concept of information-assisted selling. For simplicity, the approach gives people the information upfront, allowing them to understand how much something costs before they even ask about it. Grant believes in this technique because it focuses on a fundamental concept โ building value.
By building value, Grant emphasizes one thing:
“Everybody needs to win. Everybody needs to feel good about the transaction. I’d rather pay a little more and make sure you feel good than paying a little less where you’ll feel bad. As I try to do more deals, everybody seems to get motivated, whether it’s a buyer or a seller. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with the money. You have to find the motivation.” – Grant Cardone
I want you to stop and think hard. What makes you tick? What keeps you going on when things are getting tough? Is it the money, your kids, your partner, or your family? Is it the feeling of accomplishing hard things?
Whatever it is, knowing what motivates you will help you lead a fulfilling life. A robust personal motivation is something that cannot be taken away from you. It will allow you to step outside your place of comfort and be brave to take steps toward being anything you want in life. If you’re creative, it will help you unleash your talents and potential. If you’re a salesman, it could turn you into the best negotiator who has walked the face of the earth.
Through your motivation, you can build your brand and gain followers. You might be small today, but remember that every whale was once a minnow.
