I want to start this 5-Minute Friday with a quote from author David G Allen: “Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind.”
How many times have you made plans, had expectations, or set goals that were unfulfilled? 2020 has been an extremely different year from what we all expected – that’s for sure. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on people’s health, businesses, jobs, and vacation plans.
Today, July 24, 2020, was supposed to be the day of the Opening Ceremony for the Tokyo Summer Olympics. I had plans to be there. But forget me. Thousands of athletes really had plans to be there. Now, we all know that the Olympics, like so many other events, have been postponed.
This requires immense patience. For many aging athletes, this was the last chance for them to compete in the Olympics. My guest this week, for example, Kerri Walsh-Jennings, was hoping for one last crack at glory. New athletes, who thought this was their perfect moment to burst onto the international stage, are also facing massive disappointment.
This leads me into the topic of this 5-Minute Friday: How can we turn discouragement into patience? How can we not let our unmet expectations ruin our future?
